The Hadza Tribe: Guardians of the Oldest Way of Life

The Hadza Tribe: Guardians of the Oldest Way of Life

Deep in the heart of Northern Tanzania, near the dry plains of Lake Eyasi. We find the Hadzabe people. Their way of life is deeply rooted in prehistoric human experience, a life close to the land without modern technologies. Their survival as observed from the circulating TikTok videos revolves around hunting animals, gathering fruits, digging wild tubers, and collecting honey.

The two most famous figures are Chabba and Dudukwe, who are at the forefront, capturing the attention of most users on TikTok. They showcase their hunting skills, songs, and the meals they prepare after hunting. Both are admired for their extensive knowledge, leadership, and willingness to engage with the outside world while upholding their traditions. The Hadzabe people do not adhere to a written religion; their belief system is oral and deeply connected to nature.

The Hadzabe people continue to demonstrate to the world that their way of life is sustainable and healthy. They rely entirely on the land for their survival and do not utilise any modern methods to sustain themselves. It can be said that they are a spiritual tribe rather than a religious one. They connect with the land and nourish their souls through it. People like Chabba and Dudukwe lead ceremonial songs, dances, and honey rituals. Symbolic events that tie the community together and honour the Earth that sustains them.

They are more social than individually oriented. When men go to hunt, the meat feeds the whole group. Their spirit of living shows how African people were before colonisation and is not different from the spirit of Ubuntu. They protect each other and their cultural way of living.

The exposure of the tribe may render them vulnerable to exploitation or attempts at conversion. Typically, visitors comprise content creators, researchers, and individuals from various religious backgrounds. Such interactions could primarily serve personal interests or aim to influence the tribe towards adopting modern lifestyles and beliefs. The tribe does not rely solely on monetary means for their sustenance; they engage in hunting, construct their dwellings using natural materials such as wood and grass, and continue to wear clothes crafted from animal skins. It is notable that video bloggers often monetise their content derived from these interactions. Increased exposure can result in a rise in the number of visitors to their territory, potentially disrupting their daily lives and routines.

It is important to recognise that engagement with social media can play a significant role in ensuring the safety of the Hadzabe people. Organisations are dedicated to supporting their legal protection and the preservation of their cultural heritage. Historically, encounters with outsiders have not always been positive, often leading to colonisation, enslavement, and forced conversion to different religions. Therefore, it is crucial for the Hadzabe people to carefully consider the intentions of those who seek to interact with them.
